The Premier League Table
So this is the second year of analysing the data and working out where each premier league team would finish if points we’re awarded simply on how much visitors each official website received rather than how well the team did on the pitch. Like last year each game is analysed and the website traffic of each club for that week is compared to its opponent, with the winning site taking all three points. In the event of two websites getting the equal amount of traffic each site would receive one point.
While it was close last season between Liverpool and Arsenal, with the Gunners only coming away with the win because they had more visitors over the year, this season Liverpool easily won it; taking maximum points from all 38 games.
Arsenal went from being champions to finishing third. They lost a couple of early games to Liverpool and Manchester United at home and away which cost them their title. They were victorious in all their other games finishing on 102 points. A little bit of good news for Arsène Wenger.
Manchester United have climbed a place from Last year and moved into second position only losing to Liverpool home and away. While there is a myth out there that most of Manchester United fans come from Essex, this isn’t exactly the case when it comes to website visits. When we analyse which postal areas are sending traffic to www.manutd.com it’s not actually Essex or anywhere down south, but Sheffield. For the 12 weeks running up to the 7th May, 11.63% of UK traffic to Manchester United’s website came from Sheffield, then Manchester and Oldham. Number 5 on the list was a little weird; Liverpool. The kop must be keeping an eye on the old enemy.
While Leicester has had an amazing season, and well done to them, they have only gone up slightly in terms of website traffic. They finished last season in 14th and this year only managed to reach 11th, but in contrast to Manchester United nearly 30% of their traffic comes from Leicester. Maybe next year more people will be visiting their site from further afield.
Aston Villa may have been shocking on the pitch this year, but at least their fans have their website. Maybe they had their phones in their pockets and it accidently visited the website but they finished a respectable 9/10???. So a top half finish.
Most of the league was sorted coming into the final weekend of the football, Newcastle and Palace we’re fighting each other for 14/15 in the table but they were both safe from relegation.
The only teams who had something left to fight for were Watford and Stoke. Watford started the weekend in the bottom three on the same number of points as the Potters and Stoke only being out of the basement positions on the total number of visitors they have had all season. While both teams lost on the final day, it was the total number of visitors which kept Stoke / Watford in the league for another year.
Chelsea managed 4th last season but this year they have lost Champions League football to Spurs. While Tottenham will be happily playing in the Champions League next year, Chelsea will have to contend with 6th and a place in the Europa League.
While Swansea may have finished bottom, at least they did better than last year’s bottom club Hull City and at least get some points on the board. They may have only managed 2 home wins all season, but that is still better than the Tigers managed last year.
Bournemouth were a lot of pundits favourites to be relegated this season but they have played some amazing football and won a lot of neutrals over. Unfortunately, that hasn’t equated to website visitors. They only managed three victories all season with the clubs small but loyal fan base not enough to keep them in the league this year.
